Solar diffraction of LIGO-band gravitational waves

چکیده

We show that chirping gravitational waves in the LIGO frequency band $f=1 - 5000$ Hz can be gravitationally diffracted by Sun, due to coincidence of its Fresnel length $r_F \propto \sqrt{1\, {\rm AU}/f}$ and solar radius $r_\odot$. This diffraction is detectable through frequency-dependent amplification wave, albeit with low event rates. also advocate allows probing inner profile evolution frequencies. Along course, we develop diffractive lensing terms simple convergence shear a lens emphasize relevance high-frequency regimes including merger ringdown phases for detection. work not only presents an interesting opportunity ongoing future LIGO-band missions but develops long-wavelength universe. A similar phenomenon help discover non-relativistic wave dark matter, as studied sequel.

The Detection of Gravitational Waves with LIGO

Gravitational wave emission is expected to arise from a variety of astrophysical phenomena. A new generation of detectors with sensitivity consistent with expectation from such sources is being developed. The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), one of these ambitious undertakings, is being developed by a Caltech-MIT collaboration. It consists of two widely separated inte...

Searching for gravitational waves with LIGO

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors have reached their design sensitivity, and searches for gravitational waves are ongoing. We highlight current attempts to detect various classes of signals. These include unmodelled sub-second bursts of gravitational radiation, such as from core-collapse supernovae and gamma-ray burst engines. Gravitational waves from isol...

Detecting a stochastic background of scalar gravitational waves with LIGO

With the “bouncing photon” treatment, the gauge invariance of the response function of interferometers to scalar gravitational waves (SGWs) has been recently demonstrated in its full frequency dependence in three different gauges well known in literature, while in previous works such invariance was only proved in the low frequencies approximation. After a review of scalar tensor theories of gra...

A common misconception about LIGO detectors of gravitational waves

A common misconception about laser interferometric detectors of gravitational waves purports that, because the wavelength of laser light and the length of an interferometer’s arm are both stretched by a gravitational wave, no effect should be visible, invoking an analogy with cosmological redshift in an expanding universe. The issue is clarified with the help of a direct calculation.

GRB-triggered searches for gravitational waves in LIGO data

The LIGO gravitational wave detectors have recently reached their design sensitivity and finished a two-year science run. During this period one year of data with unprecedented sensitivity has been collected. I will briefly describe the status of the LIGO detectors and the overall quality of the most recent science run. I also will present results of a search for inspiral waveforms in gravitati...
